Though all My Bloody Valentine albums have ALWAYS been an inspiration when writing our music, Charlie and I have always been particularly drawn to Loveless. Being the absolute epitome of what a shoegaze album should sound like, Loveless has always been a guide for guitar tones, vocals, lyrics, and just the overall vibe of the shoegaze sound. This was the first album in particular that drew me to the sound of shoegaze. I had always been so focused on pop and indie pop, but thanks to Kevin Shields, I’ve found myself completely enthralled by the world of shoegaze. Shield’s love for loud, distorted guitars and reverb only fueled the spark that was growing inside me for those same things. Hearing the laid-back vocals and wall of fuzz guitars made me dissociate in a way, but not that that’s a bad thing. It sent this wave of calm and peace over me. I think this is the moment when I realized that chasing the shoegaze sound was what I was meant to do with Blackberry Pyper.
